Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgery Is Not For Everyone

At some point but you may not have thought it would be something you suffered from. There are many things that can cause it, poor posture and overuse at the keyword is one of them. Initially, you will feel pain, but as the condition progresses, you may also feel weak and numbness. While your doctor wants you to think about surgery, you may not be sure about this just yet.

You should think very hard before having surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome. The fact is that many people suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome but have found alternative methods of relieve rather than resort to surgery. Surgery can solve the problem quickly, but is it as long lasting as you need it to be? Is it even in your price range?

Repetitive action is the main culprit here. That may come from throwing a ball too often or typing too much or any job that requires you to use your wrists in the same way over and over again. Because you are repeating the motion so many times, this causes the tightening of the transverse carpal ligament. This ligament has the job of holding all the ligaments in this region of your wrist in place.

Sometimes, the hands and wrists feel weak and unable to be used properly. The pain can run through the hand and up the arm. Even your fingers may feel it. The more times you repeat the actions, the more pressure is placed on the ligaments and nerves. Over time, it becomes harder to do the same motions.

Surgery for carpal tunnel is simple but can have long-term repercussions for the person having the surgery. While it is not a long and complicated surgery, the surgeon does actually cut the transverse carpal ligament and that can cause loss of strength in your hands and arms down the road. However, for the short term, this relieves the pressure on the median nerve and gives instant relief from the symptoms of carpal tunnel.

It will take about six weeks for the individual to recover from having the surgery, with therapy. There are risks involved and the benefit of the surgical procedure is not known until after the healing process has completed. Because of all of this strain, many people do look for alternative remedies and treatments before going through with the surgical procedure.

Avoid constantly performing the activity without a short break. This surgery is expensive, costing more than $10,000 in most cases, definitely worth stretching!

Sometimes, these alternative options may not be enough to avoid surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome. Get a second opinion first. Be sure you are doing everything you can to avoid the surgery even working with a physical therapist.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgery May Not Be For You

You’ve heard the condition of carpal tunnel syndrome before, but you never thought you’d have it. Years of bad posture, stress, and too much time at the computer keyboard have left you with pain in your wrists, weakness and numbness. You have read up on the subject and are torn about whether or not you should have surgery for your condition. Perhaps even your doctor has recommended it!

Take the time to truly learn about and understand carpal tunnel syndrome and what causes it to occur. Most cases are found in the wrists. It is generally caused by repetitive action, or the movement in the same way over and over again. It can happen to baseball players pitching too much or it can happen to anyone doing any job that involves this movement over and over again. This motion repeats so often that the transverse carpal ligament tightens up. The ligament is crucial because it holds in place all of the ligaments in the wrist.Over time, it grows worse. The ligament will tighten up, as described, and that places a good amount of pressure on the median nerve in this region. It inflames and becomes painful. This may be presented as a tingling or even a numbness.

As the transverse carpal ligament tightens, the other ligaments put pressure on the median nerve. When this nerve becomes agitated and sore, it can cause numbness, lack of strength and even great pain in the hand, wrist, fingers and even the arm. This can create problems for those who rely on their wrists and arms to do their jobs. Still thinking about surgery?

Surgery for carpal tunnel is simple but can have long-term repercussions for the person having the surgery. While it is not a long and complicated surgery, the surgeon does actually cut the transverse carpal ligament and that can cause loss of strength in your hands and arms down the road. However, for the short term, this relieves the pressure on the median nerve and gives instant relief from the symptoms of carpal tunnel.

Aside from problems later on down the road, having this surgery requires at least 6 weeks of therapy and healing for the transverse carpal ligament. It isn’t a fun recovery, and the outcome is completely unknown. For these reasons alone you might consider some alternative techniques to relieving your carpal tunnel pain.

Through stretching and exercise, you can essentially lessen or completely mitigate the effects of carpal tunnel. By stretching the transverse carpal ligament, you can ensure that the median nerve will have no lingering exposure to pressure. Good posture and taking a few breaks from the repetitive tasks can also be a big help. Besides that, surgery can cost upwards of $10,000, and who has that kind of money when you can do stretches for free?

Sometimes, these alternative options may not be enough to avoid surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome. Get a second opinion first. Be sure you are doing everything you can to avoid the surgery even working with a physical therapist.

Alternatives to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgery

If your job requires you to work closely with your hands and wrists, you may have an inkling about what carpal tunnel syndrome feels like. You can recognize that tightening in your forearm, and the numbness and even pain you will begin to feel in your wrists and hands. You know what it feels like to wake up from a sound sleep with these sensations, and you may be wondering what in the world you can do about it.

To understand carpal tunnel syndrome, you need to understand the physiology of the syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome, quite simply, is the tightening of the wrist that compresses the median nerve and causes all of the typical symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. It can be a debilitating and sometimes excruciating condition that requires some sort of intervention to repair.

This is not a great condition for those who rely on their hands and arms to do their jobs. If you are a typist or work in an office, then you know that carpal tunnel syndrome can nearly cost you your job. It is the same for others who work in construction, who are painters or who may even cut hair for a living. People take for granted that their hands and wrists can keep performing even under the greatest of strains and so they are surprised when they start feeling pain and numbness in their hands or arms.

Surgery is one option for those who wish to be rid of the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel surgery is usually done under “twilight anesthesia”. The surgery itself involves cutting the transverse carpal ligament to relieve ongoing damage to the nerves. The transverse carpal ligament is a ligament at the wrist that wraps around all the other ligaments running vertically along the arm. The idea is that cutting this ever tightening ligament will immediately reduce pressure on the other ligaments. The transverse carpal ligament will then “scar” together while leaving more room for the other ligaments.

Surgery outcomes cannot be predicted, and when you are dealing with a delicate area like the wrist, it can become complicated. Carpal tunnel surgery and rehabilitation may cost up to $10,000, plus all the time you will need to recover properly. You may also find that you lose strength in your wrist or arm.

Prevention and relief of carpal tunnel syndrome may be easier than you think. Take a few days off from whatever it is you do that aggravates your condition. This rest period will help, even if it is only a short time. Start some simple wrist exercises that will help stretch the transverse carpal ligament. This will help take the pressure off everything inside the carpal tunnel. You may need to work with a physical therapist to find the perfect stretches for you. Results should be felt almost immediately. Surgery should always be a last resort.

Preventing carpal tunnel syndrome is easier than you think. With a little effort, you can do the stretches and activities necessary to reduce the tightness of your transverse carpal ligament and avoid risky surgery.

Strange Exercises ‘Cure’ Carpal Tunnel Pain

Subscribe To Our Feed Thu 9 Jul 2009

by Tom Nicholson

For those of you who have been experiencing pain in the wrists and arms, it’s time to start using a few carpal tunnel exercises. While you’re working on the prevention, you will notice that the exercises we’re about to share will also relieve stress. So if you are having a hard day at work, and the tension is building, kill two birds with one stone right at your desk.

Squeeze The Stress Out

One of the best exercises to get over carpal tunnel syndrome is to squeeze something with some yield. A stress ball, or a tennis ball or handball. Stress balls are made out of closed cell foam and give the least resistance, and they can work out the flexors of your hands. They’re also good for relieving stress - hence the name. Higher end ones are hand strength conditioners and offer more resistance.

Simply make a pattern of squeezing the ball without stopping - squeeze and hold it for five seconds, then release. Repeat as needed, it’ll be about 15 reps at a time for most people. Ultimately, what this does is strengthen your wrists. As your wrist muscles get stronger, they protect the sheathes that the tendons go through that cause carpal tunnel syndrome.

Doing The Twist.

If you’re doing a lot of typing, invest in chair with arm wrests, and put pads in front of your keyboard and especially your mouse. This will keep your wrists elevated when typing, and will avoid the biggest cause of carpal tunnel syndrome, the “wrists cocked all the way back” extension. Plus, it’s also a lot more comfortable for extended typing. Every hour or so, pick up the wrist wrest and squeeze it, like you’re turning the throttle on the motor cycle - this flexes the wrist and helps cut down on the tension and pain.

The Starfish Stretch

Something you can do several times throughout the day is open your hand up as wide as possible, and curl your fingers down without bending them all the way. You will start to feel a strain around your knuckles and joints, as well as the muscles stretching from your fingers to the wrist. The first few won’t be a big deal, but the more you do the more you feel the strain.

Other Healthy Habits

Keeping The Habit Going

There are other carpel tunnel exercises we can teach, but this is a good starting point. After a week or so of this, you’ll notice that some things twinge less often when you do a long day of typing, and you’ll remain relaxed for a longer stretch of time.

If You’ve Been Told You Need Carpal Tunnel Surgery

Anyone that has suffered with carpal tunnel syndrome for any length of time, knows how the symptoms can be debilitating. Your wrists, hands, and arms can have numbness, you can also have pain and loss of strength too. And to think you get this condition just by doing your job! This problem happens when you job entails repetitive motion, which can make the nerve in the wrist to wind up compressed, aggravated, and damaged.

This can wind up making you less productive. Most of the time the sufferers of this carpal tunnel syndrome, are affected mainly in the hands and wrists, but the arms can be affected too including the elbow. Hammering in a repetitive fashion, typing, and throwing are some on the actions that can create this condition. If left untreated this condition can damage nerves permanently. You should at least seek out some treatment to help you regain your ability to work effectively again.

So what happens that might cause carpal tunnel syndrome? Carpel tunnel occurs-in the hands and wrist-when the median nerve is compressed or damaged. This is due to a tightening of the transverse carpal ligament that bundles all of the other ligaments in your wrist tightly. Your median nerve runs along with those inside the wrist. This is what gives you the strength and leverage your hands need to do their jobs.

Repeated motion can cause this transverse carpal ligament to get compressed, then extra pressure can happen to your wrists. If you have any bad habits as you do your job the issue can be made worse. You will be glad to know though, that methods exist to help you deal with carpal tunnel syndrome, and relieve the pain your hands and wrists are going through.

One of the options you can use to relieve your symptoms is to opt for surgery. If someone has tried every other way to relieve their symptoms, this may be an option. However, you have to know that it is a procedure that can cause more harm than benefit down the road. During the light surgery, the transverse carpal ligament is cut completely, relieving the pressure on the median nerve but leaving your hands weak. Of course, you can never completely determine the outcome of any surgery.

Aside, from that there are several weeks of recovery ahead of you, and a price tag of up to $10,000 to contend with. If your surgery doesn’t help you get back to work, then you are certainly in some trouble. Of course, many opt to have only one effected hand done at a time, while trying more natural means on the other hand. And it is good to know that other, natural remedies are available. Exercises and therapy to help stretch you transverse carpal ligament can greatly reduce the chances that you will get carpel tunnel syndrome. Also, wrist and hand massages are essential for anyone who uses their hands a lot.

Before you automatically consider surgery, look for other ways to relieve the pain that comes with carpal tunnel syndrome. History has shown that surgery may not be the only, best choice for you.

Yoga Exercises for Carpal Tunnel Sufferers

Subscribe To Our Feed Wed 8 Jul 2009

by Tom Nicholson

Anyone who faces a computer screen for a long time each day, tapping the keyboard like mad to meet deadlines, needs to keep the danger of carpal tunnel syndrome in mind. Excessive and repetitive stress on the joints can cause people to develop the problem; resulting in serious pain that can even prevent you from using your keyboard. There is, however, a solution to strengthen the joints and reduce the pain that comes with the symptoms - carpal tunnel exercises using yoga. By using yoga, you become more aware of your body, your mind and your soul’s needs.

But how exactly do carpal tunnel exercises using yoga work?

Physical Healing with Yoga

Anytime you go to the doctor, they are more focused on giving you a prescription to solve the problem instead of preventing it. Unfortunately with carpal tunnel syndrome you could end up taking medicine for the rest of your life if you don’t have surgery. You can’t blame them because it’s what they know and we try to trust their expertise. Unfortunately the relief is only temporary and in the end you find yourself with more problems then help.

Instead, you should be focusing on strengthening your body. It’s one of the best ways to treat CTS and a lot easier than going through surgery. The way it works is you use yoga exercises to slowly apply strain to the muscles and ligaments. The result is that the light strain will build them stronger and make a more them more durable.

Once you are able to stretch your muscles, this type of carpal tunnel exercise will help your median nerve. The conclusion is it takes away the pain of CTS. Most importantly you won’t find yourself spending large sums of money on costly procedures. All it takes is a little time and the healing process will begin.

Healing the Mind

The body is not the only thing that is healed with yoga exercises, the mind is also given the appropriate relaxation it needs when an individual undergoes the various exercises and positions that make up yoga exercises.

The mind and the body are intricately connected in more ways than one. Psychologists study this connection in a scientifically empirical manner, while priests study this in a religious and spiritual manner. However, both approaches are just two sides of the same coin. They both acknowledge that the mind’s condition has a powerful effect on the body, and vice-versa.

Carpal tunnel exercises using yoga addresses both physical and mental healing, making yoga so effective in the healing process. A stressed and conflicted mind makes problems worse; just look at the difference between cancer patients who survive by being strong and cancer patients who die because they gave up on life. By helping people clear their minds, yoga allows people to cope with the daily stressors that exacerbate problems like carpal tunnel syndrome, giving them the emotional and mental strength required to ease the body’s pain.

The Bottom Line

A 1998 study has proved that carpal tunnel exercises using yoga have been able to help carpal tunnel sufferers recover more easily in time. This makes yoga a very valid and very effective method of significantly easing the suffering of carpal tunnel patients.

Take this information to heart, and if you know someone with CTS then pass it along. When you are able to build a stronger body and mind you’ll realize a solution is in sight. When this happens, it may just be the happiest day of your life.
